Choose a stretch you can manage with margin
An autumn itinerary works better when the plan has some free space. First write the date you need to be in Santiago and the return day, then distribute the walking days. If every day is already booked, a rain stop or an overnight farther than expected becomes hard to recover.
For a first plan you can compare the stretch from Sarria, that from Ponferrada and the departure from Porto. They are not equivalent trips: length, climbs, initial connections and services change. Choose based on available time and the walks you have already tried, without turning the schedule into an obligation.
Check lodgings before deciding where to stop
The presence of an albergue on the map does not confirm it is open on your dates. Contact the facility and ask until when it accepts guests, whether it takes reservations, what time you can arrive and what alternative exists in the nearby town. Save the answer and the number on your phone.
For each day note a main stop and a possible closer stop. If weather or pace change, you will already have a concrete solution. The alternative must be reachable and available: a name found online is not enough.
Use the stage weather, not only Santiago's
A forecast for the arrival city does not describe all the places you will cross. Check the localities of the day and official warnings, especially when the route climbs. The Xunta recommends walking with daylight; in autumn this check must enter the choice of departure time and the stop.
Decide the plan in the evening, then recheck it in the morning. A warning or a detour may require shortening the stretch or stopping. Keep map and contacts available offline; do not entrust all the organization to a connection you might not have.
Confirm backpack transport before lightening your luggage
If you plan to ship the backpack, include the exact dates and the names of the departure and arrival facilities in the quote. It is not enough to know that the operator serves the Camino Francés: it must also serve your stage, on the chosen day, with an agreed delivery point.
For the day keep documents, phone, rain protection, water and what you need until pickup with you. Before leaving the lodging check the label, time and method of baggage deposit.
A checklist to complete the night before
Note departure, arrival, confirmed accommodation, alternative, resupply points and local contact. Add any alerts and the time by which you want to arrive. It’s a simple page that makes the itinerary readable even for those helping you from home.
Download the PDF guide of your route and protect the credential from water. The cheat-sheet gathers essential references; the day’s conditions should still be rechecked on site.
