The credential accompanies the journey
On the credential you collect the stamps of the places you pass through. For Santiago it documents the route and can be requested at pilgrim accommodations; it is not a reservation and does not automatically grant the right to a free bed. The Compostela is instead the final certificate, issued to those who meet the cathedral's requirements.
Get the document before the first stage. Put it in a cover that protects it from rain and check that the initial data are legible. A photograph of the stamps is useful as a personal copy, but should not be considered an automatically accepted substitute for the original.
How to arrange collection in Italy
The Confraternity of San Jacopo publishes a form and a list of priors and delegates. Issuance is free, with an optional donation, for pilgrimages in a spirit of faith. Before presenting yourself send the request and ask for confirmation of location, date and delivery method.
Our dedicated page gathers references for Milan, Turin, Bologna, Florence, Rome, Genoa, Padua and Perugia. In Milan the Sanctuary of Santa Maria alla Fontana is indicated for the Lombard Chapter meetings; the calendar and presence must be confirmed.
In the request specify where you will start, the planned day and the destination. If you live far from the pickup point, ask the contact which arrangements are possible. Do not assume that an office is open like a normal shop.
If you prefer to collect it on the Way
L’Ufficio del Pellegrino publishes lists of authorized distributors in Spain and outside Spain. Check the location where you will start walking and contact the chosen point: not all parishes or albergue have credentials available.
Leave time between the arrival of the trip and the first stage. If the office opens after the time you would like to start, collecting it the day before can simplify the schedule. Save the distributor’s address and response together with your travel documents.
Stamps and certificate: check before departure
The rules of Santiago require two dated stamps per day, especially when you only cover the minimum distance. Check the updated requirements for your starting point and your means of travel directly with the Pilgrim’s Office, rather than relying on a rule read years ago.
For an Italian camino, instead ask its manager which credential and which certificate are required. A pilgrimage network may accept different documents, but you should not assume that every route applies the rules of Santiago. The source contact is available on our pages.
